Halitosis

Many factors can lead to halitosis, which we commonly call bad breath. Unpleasant mouth odour can be avoided through proper dental hygiene and regular check-ups.

Bad breath is often caused by bacteria in the mouth. In addition to transforming food residue and cellular debris, these bacteria also produce foul odours. Bacteria is found in plaque, tartar and untreated cavities. They start building up when a patient suffers from gingivitis or periodontitis.

Main causes of halitosis:

  • Poor dental hygiene
  • Periodontal disease
  • Cavities
  • Smoking
  • Dryness of the mouth
  • Sinus or tonsil infection
  • Certain illnesses, like diabetes
  • Some medications
  • Specific foods and drinks (garlic, onion, alcohol, coffee, etc.)

The dentist can help determine the exact cause of your bad breath and recommend the best treatment plan for you.
